Nach dem neuen Aufsetzen meiner Debian/Mepis-Distribution fand er auch den Scanner nicht (Cups-Drucker-Probleme haben sich von selbst gelöst). HP Scanjet2300C hat schon mal mit der Vorgängerversion funktioniert - wird also unterstützt.
Xsane findet das Gerät nicht. Am USB wird das Gerät erkannt.
$ sane-find-scanner
found USB scanner (vendor=0x03f0 [Hewlett-Packard], product=0x0901 [hp scanjet scanner],
chip=GL646) at libusb:004:003
$ scanimage -L
No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different, check that
the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the sane-find-scanner tool
(if appropriate).

Lösung:
Nach einigen Versuchen und google - das Gerät wird nicht über "hp" erkannt sondern unter "genesys". Eintrag unter dll.conf ergänzen

Ps: Wenn es trotzdem nicht funktioniert, -- ein hp psc2105 z.B. -

Dann einfach mal
/etc/init.d/hpoj setup
Ausführen und die Fragen mit [RETURN] beantworten.
Danach den Dienst natürlich auch noch starten mit
/etc/init.d/hpoj start
Dann klappts auch mit dem Scanner erkennen
